Jesus selected his apostles after prayerful discernment and by direct calling. Gospel accounts describe him withdrawing to pray and then appointing twelve from among his followers to be sent out (Luke 6:12-16; Mark 3:13-19). Selection rested not on social status or human merit but on availability and responsiveness. The apostles were chosen for mission and formation. Jesus taught them intimately, sent them to proclaim the kingdom and to heal, and promised the Spirit to empower their witness (Luke 9:1-2; John 15:16). Their calling prepared them to be witnesses to the resurrection and to transmit apostolic teaching that would found the Church (Acts 1:8; Ephesians 2:20).
