What is the purpose of life according to Jesus?

According to Jesus, the purpose of life is to love God fully and to love neighbor, to seek and live under God’s kingdom, and to bear spiritual fruit through union with Christ. Meaning is found in obedient relationship with God, participation in the mission of reconciliation and service, and hope in eternal communion with God (Matthew 22:37-40; John 15:1-8; Matthew 28:19-20).

Jesus frames the purpose of life primarily in relational terms: to love God with whole heart and to love neighbor. When asked about the greatest commandment, Jesus answered by quoting devotion to God and compassionate service to others as the foundation of all law and prophecy (Matthew 22:37-40).

That relational purpose is expressed as entry into and participation in God’s kingdom. Jesus declared himself the way to the Father (John 14:6), called disciples to remain in him and bear lasting fruit (John 15:1-8), and sent the church to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:18-20). Discipleship, obedience, and spiritual union are central to life’s meaning.

Ethical implications flow directly from this purpose: lives marked by mercy, justice, healing, and service. Teachings such as the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) and the judgment scene (Matthew 25:31-46) connect love of neighbor with care for the poor and vulnerable. Purpose therefore includes reconciliation, witness, and concrete acts of love in daily life.

A historical illustration arises in the life of St. Francis of Assisi, who renounced wealth to follow Christ’s call to poverty, simplicity, and service, embodying the priorities Jesus taught. Such examples show that Jesus reorients human aims from self-centered pursuits to communion with God, missionary witness, and hope in the life to come (John 10:10; Romans 8:28).
