What did Jesus say about other religions?

Jesus affirmed the uniqueness of his mission while commanding love, mercy and engagement with all people. He declared himself the way to the Father (John 14:6) yet modeled outreach across religious boundaries (John 4) and warned against harsh judgment (Matthew 7:1-2). His followers are called to proclaim truth with humility, compassion and respectful dialogue.

Deeper Insights

Jesus presented himself as the unique revelation of God and the means of access to the Father, a claim most directly expressed in his words “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). That exclusive claim shapes Christian understanding of salvation while also framing the mission to invite others into a relationship with God.

At the same time, Jesus demanded love, mercy and restraint from judgment. Key teachings such as Matthew 22:37-40 (love God and neighbor), Matthew 5:43-48 (love enemies) and Matthew 7:1-2 (do not judge) require a posture of charity and respect toward people of other faiths, calling for witness by witness by life and word rather than by coercion.

Jesus regularly crossed social and religious boundaries, notably in the encounter with the Samaritan woman (John 4:1-42) and in his reference to “other sheep” (John 10:16), indicating concern for those outside Israel’s fold. A historical anecdote that echoes this approach is St. Francis of Assisi’s meeting with Sultan al-Kamil during the Crusades, remembered as an effort to witness the Gospel through respectful dialogue rather than force.

The practical synthesis for discipleship is to combine fidelity to Christ’s claim with compassion and evangelistic humility. The Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) mandates proclamation and teaching, while Jesus’ life and sayings instruct believers to witness the truth with gentleness, service and an openness that honors the dignity of every person (John 14:6; Matthew 7:12).
