The Story Behind the Song

I wrote Be the Dad I Never Had for everyone who grew up without a father, and yes, that includes me. There’s a unique kind of silence that comes from that absence. It shapes you, it toughens you, but it also leaves a space that nothing in this world can seem to fill. This song was born inside that space.

When I wrote it, I wasn’t trying to make a statement, but to ask a question that still echoes inside me: Can Jesus truly take the place of a father? Or maybe the answer is already there, hidden in the comfort we feel when we speak to Him like a child finally heard. The ambiguity is intentional, because faith often lives in that tension between longing and believing.

For some, He becomes the father they never had. For others, He remains the voice that reminds them they are not alone. Either way, He’s there, quietly, faithfully, in the spaces our fathers left behind.

Lyrics

I cried into the silver rain,
Your shadow flickered through the pain.
No arms around, no voice, no sound,
Just heaven whispering underground.

My faith was thin, my breath was slow,
The night was deep, the world aglow.
I called Your name, it hurt, it bled,
“Can Jesus fill the space instead?”

I dreamed of faces I can’t find,
Like echoes floating through my mind.
And in the silence, soft and sad,
I asked You, “Can You be my dad?”

Jesus, hold me now,
Don’t ever let me down.
When the night feels bad,
Be the dad I never had.

Your light was falling through my skin,
It burned the dark I held within.
I felt You near, I felt You stay,
You washed the noise and fear away.

The stars were cold, but You were warm,
You took my pain, You changed its form.
And in the blur, I understood,
That broken hearts can still be good.

You filled the rooms where I once hid,
You loved me more than he ever did.
And when I cried, You weren’t mad,
You said, “My child, I’m still your dad.”

Jesus, hold me now,
Don’t ever let me down.
When the night feels bad,
Be the dad I never had.

Soft lights, soft grace,
I see Your face.
I lose the fear,
When You are near.

Jesus, hold me now,
I’m not alone somehow.
When I’m hurt and sad,
You’re the dad I never had.

Jesus, hold me now,
When I fall, somehow.
In the love You had,
You became my dad.

You’re the dad… I never had.
You’re the dad I never had.
